Here are several trends that are affecting the fitness industry, corporations, insurers and people – all ages, all sexes, all sizes and levels of fitness – that our fluid rowers, cycles, UBE and Stepmill equipment address nicely. Each of these increases the scenario for success by being ahead of change before it passes you by.

Sedentary people account for 65% of our population

and obesity now ranges by state between a low of 20% to an average of 32% as reported in a recent US Health report. Child obesity has increased at an alarming rate with kids now fighting chronic illnesses including heart problems previously not seen until boomer or senior years. Traditional fitness solutions have not slowed down this unprecedented escalation.

The escalating cost of healthcare

has more people rethinking fitness. Companies are losing 16% of profits to healthcare and wellness programs, while beneficial to those already fit, are not yet attracting and sustaining participation among those most in need – the sedentary majority. Recent media reports show 266,000 companies have dropped their healthcare coverage which will increase the motivation to get fit. Obesity related spending is at $147 billion, double what it was a decade ago according to a report this week by RTI International. This same report states over 2/3 of Americans are overweight or obese. The obesity rate has grown 37% over the last 10 years alone with no sign of slowing down.

Most fitness equipment manufacturers have looked at technology as their source of innovation.

This will hold future benefits as a single source for secure digital information (I.E. MS Vault) and health provider access increases but the current profile is one of added cost and complexity. We believe the innovation in our rowers is more relevant as it eliminates many of the barriers to fitness making it an immediate benefit.

Fun rules!

Despite some equipment benefits (any exercise is better than none), most people avoid solutions that are not fun, easy to use, a comfortable environment, convenient, and that deliver results in less time. Ours does all of these excellently.

While stressing the body is good, most fitness options can distress the body which is bad.

Low impact fitness programs have grown in value as they stress the body properly with little risk of distress and related injury.

The online communities that have blossomed over the last several years are now becoming the path to trust, shared knowledge and advocacy.

Web MD had it right when they gave people easier access to preliminary health education. Now, through our FitWay online community and a few other fitness blogs and communities, people are opening up to each other, gaining insight and asking better questions, finding better health resources and most importantly gaining true factual support. This is critical if we want to be a catalyst to a major shift from low attention to ones health and fitness to higher engagement in owning our path to living active lifestyles. Nothing hurts more than to see couples who waited to retire to climb the hills and temples in Greece or elsewhere, to suddenly realize they are not fit enough to do so. Take fun seriously and prepare yourself to live a rewarding life...now.
